Bucket List Kauai: 40 Unforgettable Things to See, Do, and Eat! ππΊπ§

From the must-do day trip adventures to can’t-miss delicious food trucks, here are the most awesome things to add to your Kauai Bucket List.
Nicknamed the “Garden Isle,” the Hawaiian island of Kauai is a lush, tropical paradise known for emerald peaks, plunging waterfalls, and jaw-dropping beaches.
Beyond those obvious scenic attributes, I love Kauai for its fantastic farm-to-table food trucks and the ease of encounters with Hawaii’s endangered wildlife (from the required minimum distance, of course!).
Whether youβre hiking the iconic Na Pali Coast or indulging in a mouth-watering taro donut from my favorite Kauai food truck, thereβs no shortage of awesome things to add to your Kauai itinerary.
Depending on how many days you have to explore, you probably won’t be able to squeeze it all in. But thanks to the island’s petite size, you can see a LOT in just a few days!
So to help you make the most of your trip to Kauai, Iβve put together a list of my top 40 favorite sights, activities, and yummy eats around the island. A Kauai Bucket List, if you will.
And yes, you’ll need a car to explore the island. Here’s my pick…
Discount Hawaii Car Rental
For rental cars in Hawaii, go to the local experts. They’ll find you the best rate among all the major companies with no booking fees. And their customer support is top-notch.
From adventure-filled hikes to where to find napping turtles, here – in no particular order – are all my favorite things to see, do, and eat on Kauai.
Let’s get started!
1. A Boat Trip to the Na Pali Coast
If you only have time for one excursion when you visit Kauai, make it a boat trip to the Na Pali Coast. Especially if it’s whale season!
Note: This post may contain affiliate links. If you choose to book through these links, I receive a small commission, which I will likely blow on mai tais, poke, and shave ice.Β All of this internet voodoo takes place at no additional cost to you.Β

Kauaiβs most dramatic stretch of coastline is known for hidden sea caves, towering cliffs, and pristine beaches that are only accessible by water.
Whether you explore on a catamaran like the fantastic Snorkel Tour Aboard the Lucky Lady or choose the thrilling Na Pali Coast Super Raft Aventure, this day trip is a must.
2. Visit the Kalalau Lookout
Take in breathtaking panoramic views of the lush Kalalau Valley from this iconic lookout point in Kokeβe State Park. On a clear day, youβll see emerald cliffs plunging toward the Pacific Ocean. Itβs one of the most photogenic spots on Kauai.
3. Explore Waimea Canyon
Known as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” Waimea Canyon offers jaw-dropping views of deep, colorful gorges and rugged terrain. Stretching 10 miles long and over a mile wide, the 3,600ft deep canyon offers visitors numerous hiking trails and lookout points to take in its beauty.
Stop at several viewpoints or hike one of the many trails for even more epic scenery.
Oh, and don’t miss the unique Red Dirt Waterfall. Located within Waimea Canyon, this charming seasonal waterfall cascades down the canyonβs vibrant red rock walls.
4. See Wailua Falls
If youβre short on time and want to see one of Kauaiβs most gorgeous waterfalls, follow Highway 56 a few minutes north of Lihue on Kauaiβs east side and stop at the lookout point for Wailua Falls (two waters).

Shout out to my fellow children of the 80βs, this is the waterfall featured in the opening scenes of the TV show βFantasy Island.β
5. Uluwehi (Secret) Falls Kayak Hike
One of Kauai’s most popular day trips, the Guided Secret Falls Kayak & Hike is a terrific way to spend an afternoon. Kayak up the Wailua River, then take a short hike through the rainforest to reach the enchanting Secret Falls.
This waterfall is a hidden gem surrounded by lush greenery and perfect for cooling off after the 2-mile kayak adventure.
6. Visit Kilauea Lighthouse
Perched on a cliffside at the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, this historic lighthouse is a prime spot for birdwatching and breathtaking coastal views. During winter, you might even spot whales offshore!
Note: The lighthouse is closed for renovations from February 17 – April 30, 2025. Luckily, during that time you’ll still be able to view the lighthouse from the main lookout point nearby.
Just remember, when it does reopen, you need a reservation to visit the lighthouse (not for the lookout point). Reservations can be made up to 2 months in advance on Recreation.gov.
7. Fern Grotto River Cruise
Take a peaceful boat ride along the Wailua River to the famous Fern Grotto. This natural cave, draped in lush ferns, offers a serene and unique experience with its stunning natural acoustics.
8. Hike the Kalalau Trail
This world-famous 11-mile trail along the Na Pali Coast offers unparalleled views of rugged cliffs and turquoise waters. Whether you hike a shorter section or go all the way to Kalalau Beach, this trail is an unforgettable experience.
Just keep in mind that this is a serious hike for experienced hikers only. If you just want to see the views of the Na Pali coast, take a boat trip or visit the Kalalau Lookout Point (#2 on this list!).
9. Take a Scenic Helicopter Flight
Soar above Kauai for a birdβs-eye view of the islandβs dramatic landscapes, including Waimea Canyon, the Na Pali Coast, and hidden waterfalls.
Whether you book the popular doors-off helicopter adventure or the slightly more tame fixed-wing aircraft, a scenic flight is the best way to appreciate Kauaiβs wild, untamed beauty.
10. Visit the Spouting Horn Blowhole
This quick and easy stop near Poipu Beach is one of Kauai’s best free things to do.
Watch as waves force water through a lava tube at Spouting Horn, creating a geyser-like spray and a distinctive roar-like sound. Itβs a fun and photogenic natural phenomenon with free parking and beautiful views.

11. See Opaekaβa Falls
This beautiful, easily accessible waterfall cascades 150 feet into a lush valley. Opaekaβa Falls is a popular stop along the Wailua River area and makes for great photos.
12. Hike to Hoβopiβi Falls
While this isn’t the best waterfall Kauai has to offer, the beautiful trail through Kauaiβs lush rainforest to reach Hoβopiβi Falls adds to its overall beauty. The hike itself is fairly easy though the trail isn’t well-marked in some spots.
The charm of this underrated waterfall hike is that it feels like you’ve discovered your own little slice of paradise on Kauai.
13. Hanapepe Swinging Bridge
Take a walk across this charming, historic suspension bridge in Hanapepe. It’s a bit of an adventure as the weight is limited to 15 people at a time and the bridge sways gently with your steps.
But if you don’t mind the rope bridge vibes, it’s a fun photo opportunity.
14. Visit McBryde Garden
Explore one of the largest botanical gardens on Kauai, filled with rare and endangered Hawaiian plants. McBryde Garden offers a serene escape into nature with scenic trails and guided tours.
15. Spot a Nene in the Wild!
The nene, or Hawaiian goose, is Hawaiiβs state bird and can be spotted in areas like Kokeβe State Park, along the road to Kilauea Lighthouse, and strolling the grounds of many resorts.
Seeing these endangered birds in their natural habitat is a special experience.
16. Hike Kokeβe State Park
With miles of scenic trails, Kokeβe State Park offers stunning views of both Waimea Canyon and the Na Pali Coast. Itβs a hikerβs paradise with trails ranging from easy walks to challenging treks.

Take a tour of the largest coffee farm in the U.S. and learn about the coffee-growing process from bean to cup. Sample a variety of blends and take home some island-grown coffee as a souvenir.
18. Hike Haβena State Park
Home to the iconic Kalalau Trail and Keβe Beach, Haβena State Park offers spectacular coastal views and lush jungle scenery. Advance reservations are required, so plan ahead to enjoy this stunning park.
Reservations can be made on the state parks website.
19. Visit the Kauai Museum
Learn about Kauaiβs rich history, culture, and art through exhibits at the Kauai Museum in Lihue.
Itβs a fun activity on a rainy day and a great way to better appreciate Kauaiβs past and present.
20. Winter Whale Watching
From December to April, humpback whales migrate to Kauaiβs warm waters and it’s one of the best times of the year to visit the islands. If you visit Hawaii during these months, a whale-watching trip is an absolute must.
Though you can sometimes spot these majestic creatures breaching and spouting from shore, you’ll get up close and personal on a whale-watching boat trip.

21. Princeville Botanical Gardens
Discover a hidden paradise filled with exotic plants, tropical flowers, and cacao trees. Guided tours provide fascinating insights into native Hawaiian plants and chocolate-making.
The only way to visit is by booking a 3-hour guided walking tour that includes fruit and honey samples and a chocolate tasting. Tickets can be booked directly on their website.
22. Malasadas at Kauai Bakery
Every Hawaiian island has that one famous bakery that’s known for freshly made malasadas (Portuguese doughnuts). On Oahu, it’s Leonard’s Bakery. And on Kauai, it’s Kauai Bakery.
This small, unassuming bakery is tucked away in a big Lihue shopping center and it’s easy to miss. But do yourself a favor and add a stop at Kauai Bakery for this warm, sugary treat that’s a local favorite. It’s perfect for breakfast or a sweet snack.

23. Taro Donuts at Holey Grail
Holey Grail serves up taro-based donuts fried in coconut oil and topped with creative flavors like lilikoi glaze and cacao nibs.
They have a rotating menu of flavors and all donuts are made to order so plan to wait a few minutes when you stop by.
With locations in Hanalei and Kapaa, these donuts are as delicious as they are Instagram-worthy.
24. Breakfast at Kountry Kitchen
Start your day with a hearty breakfast at Kountry Kitchen in Kapaβa. Known for giant pancakes and tasty island-inspired dishes, this spot is a favorite among both locals and visitors.
My favorite thing on the menu here is the bacon avocado eggs benedict!
25. Sip a Latte at Java Kai
Java Kai is a laid-back cafΓ© in Kapaβa serving up excellent coffee, lattes, and breakfast options.
Grab a cup of locally roasted coffee and a delicious breakfast sandwich and enjoy the relaxed island vibes.
26. Acai Bowl at Little Fish Coffee
Cool off with a refreshing acai bowl at Little Fish Coffee, where bowls are loaded with fresh tropical fruit and granola. Itβs a healthy and tasty way to fuel your Kauai adventures.
27. Puka Dog
Sink your teeth into a famous Puka Dog, a Hawaiian-style hot dog served in a toasted bun with tropical relishes like pineapple and mango mustard.
Made famous when Anthony Bourdain visited for his TV show “No Reservations Hawaii,” itβs a unique twist on a classic that you can only find in Hawaii.
28. Mama Bearβs Kitchen Truck
I’ve been known to plan a mid-week trip to Kauai just to eat at this fantastic Waimea food truck. It’s only open on weekdays from 7am – 2pm so plan accordingly!
Mama Bearβs Kitchen Truck serves up mouthwatering local comfort food with a gourmet twist. Popular dishes include poke bowls, garlic shrimp, and Hawaiian-style plate lunches.
Everything on the menu is great but the βMonte Bear Cristoβ is my absolute favorite.
29. Aloha Liege Waffles Truck
This food truck is known for its decadent liege waffles, topped with everything from fresh fruit to Nutella. It’s a sweet treat that will satisfy your cravings after a day of exploring.
30. Wishing Well Shave Ice Hanalei
Enjoy some of the best shave ice on Kauai at Wishing Well in Hanalei. This small food truck has one thing that most shave ice shops in Hawaii don’t…organic syrups! That’s one of the main reasons this is always my go-to stop for shave ice on Kauai.
Between the organic syrups and the fresh fruit toppings, Wishing Well elevates this island favorite to a whole new level.
31. Smith Family Luau
Experience an authentic Hawaiian luau complete with traditional food, live music, and Polynesian dance performances. The Smith Family Luau is one of Kauaiβs most renowned cultural experiences.
32. Lilikoi Pie at Aunty Lilikoi
Located in Waimea, Aunty Lilikoi Passion Fruit Products is famous for all things lilikoi (passion fruit). As a long-time lilikoi lover, this family-owned shop is always a must-stop for me.
There are plenty of things to sample in the shop to find your favorite treats but my favorites are the tangy-sweet lilikoi pie and the spicy lilikoi marmalade. This cute shop perfectly captures the tropical flavors of Kauai and is a must-try for dessert lovers.
33. The Al Pastor Taco Truck
Located in Kapaa, this is one of my favorite stops on Kauai for a delicious lunch.
Grab some of the islandβs best fish tacos (I also love the shrimp tacos!) at this popular food truck known for its flavorful, fresh ingredients. Itβs a delicious and quick stop while youβre out exploring.
34. Enjoy a Mai Tai at Tahiti Nui
Tahiti Nui in Hanalei is a legendary spot for tropical drinks and live music. Sip a perfectly crafted mai tai and soak in the lively atmosphere at this charming local hangout.
35. See the Honu at Poipu Beach
Poipu Beach is more than just one of the best beaches on Kauai. It’s also one of the best spots on Kauai to see honu (Hawaiian green sea turtles) in their natural habitat.

On any given day, you’ll find a dozen or more honu basking in the sun under the watchful eye of local volunteers who keep them safely roped off.
Remember to keep a respectful minimum distance of at least 10′ (it’s the law!) as you watch these beautiful creatures.
They are, after all, here to rest and relax.
36. Stroll the Pier at Hanalei Bay
Located on Kauaiβs north shore, Hanalei Bay is a postcard-perfect crescent of golden sand surrounded by lush mountains. This iconic beach with its picturesque pier is one of the largest on the island, so thereβs plenty of space to relax and soak in the scenery.
Take a leisurely stroll along Hanalei Pier to enjoy stunning views of the bayβs crescent-shaped beach and surrounding mountains. Itβs an idyllic spot to relax and take Instagram-worthy photos.
37. Sunbathe at Salt Pond Beach
Salt Pond Beach on the west side of Kauai is a local favorite, with a laid-back vibe and protected swimming areas.
Named for the nearby Hawaiian salt ponds, this beach has shallow lagoons that are great for families. If youβre looking to get away from it all on your Kauai vacation, this is a great spot.
The sunsets here are incredible and a memorable way to end your day.
38. Lydgate Beach Lagoons
This terrific beach is home to two protected swimming lagoons that are perfect for families with kids or anyone who wants to take a refreshing dip without worrying about strong currents (thatβs me!).
The lagoons also have a nice safe sandy bottom (no coral to hurt your feet!) and youβll even spot some tropical fish swimming about.
On our most recent visit to Kauai, my husband and I stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn Wailua Bay located just a few steps from these lovely lagoons.
39. Unwind at Anini Beach
Located in a quiet residential neighborhood, Anini Beach is my favorite Kauai beach for pure relaxation. Home to one of Kauaiβs largest coral reefs, this pristine beach is a prime spot for snorkeling and paddleboarding.
The calm, shallow waters and lack of crowds also make it ideal for a peaceful beach day.
40. Snorkel Tunnels Beach
Tunnels Beach, also known as Makua Beach, is a snorkeling paradise with vibrant coral reefs and marine life. Surrounded by stunning cliffs, it’s a favorite spot for both underwater exploration and scenic beauty.
And that’s a wrap!
Kauai is more than just a pretty face β itβs an island where nature, culture, and delicious eats combine to create one unforgettable vacation. From chasing waterfalls to the sweet (and tart!) taste of lilikoi pie, this list showcases all the best of Hawaii’s Garden Isle.
But remember, this Kauai Bucket List is just the tip of the iceberg on Hawaii’s laid-back island gem.
So take your time when you set off to explore. Savor Kauai’s beauty at a slow pace and there’s no doubt you’ll discover your own favorite spots to add to my list.
Until next time, a hui hou!
