How to Spend a Week on Maui: The Perfect 7-Day Itinerary for First-Time Visitors 🌈
From beautiful beaches and fun snorkeling trips to delicious food trucks and one iconic road trip, here’s how to spend 7 perfect days on Maui.
Nicknamed the Valley Isle, Maui is one Hawaiian island that truly has it all. World-famous golden beaches, lush waterfalls, dramatic volcanic peaks, and some of the best snorkeling in Hawaii.
Add in Maui’s world-class food scene—from fresh poke bowls to banana bread on the Road to Hana—and you’ve got the recipe for a trip you’ll never forget.
But there are so many great things to do on Maui that it can be a little overwhelming.
And if you’re planning your first trip to Maui, you may be struggling to decide how best to organize your days to squeeze in everything on your Maui Bucket List.

As Oahu residents, my husband and I pop over to Maui often, and we’ve seen and done it all.
So the 7-day Maui itinerary I’m recommending here is designed to hit the island’s highlights without feeling rushed. You’ll be able to cover all the best of Maui and still have plenty of time for relaxation (which is what Maui does best!).
But before we get into the day-by-day itinerary, let’s get our bearings…

Where to Stay on Maui
Most first-time visitors choose between these three main areas:
Wailea (South Shore): Upscale, luxury resort area with calm beaches, stunning sunsets, and high-end restaurants. This part of Maui is ideal for honeymooners.
In this area, I love the Grand Wailea Resort & Spa and the Wailea Beach Marriott Resort.
Kihei (South Shore): The family-friendly Kihei area is known for more affordable, laid-back accommodations like condos and vacation rentals. The Maui Coast Hotel and the Sugar Beach Resort are good, budget-friendly choices (and you won’t find many of those on Maui!).
Kaanapali/Kapalua (West Maui): These popular resort areas are home to beautiful beaches, plenty of sunshine, and scenic coastal trails. Like Kihei, this part of Maui is also great for families.
My go-to hotel picks on this side of the island are The Whaler Resort in Kaanapali and the Ritz-Carlton Maui in Kapalua. (Note: Historic Lahaina town remains closed to visitors due to the 2023 wildfires.)
Practical Tips for a Maui Itinerary
Rent a car. You’ll need one to explore. Maui is a big island, and the best things to see and do are spread out across the island.
Discount Hawaii Car Rental
For rental cars in Hawaii, go to the local experts. They’ll find you the best rate among all the major companies with no booking fees. And their customer support is top-notch.
Book in advance. Reservations are required for sunrise at Haleakalā, ʻĪao Valley, Waianapanapa Black Sand Beach, and popular restaurants like Mama’s Fish House.

Plan buffer days. The Road to Hana, Haleakala National Park, and a day trip to Lanai are full-day experiences. Build in some slower days to balance.
Pack layers. Especially if you’re planning to do Haleakalā for sunrise, it can be freezing. Even if you’re just planning to explore Upcountry, it’s often at least 10 degrees cooler than at sea level.

Ok, now let’s dive into how to spend your week!
The Perfect 7-Day Maui Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival & Settle In
- Arrive at Kahului Airport (OGG)
- Pick up your rental car and check into your hotel
- Take it easy with a beach walk or sunset swim
Your first day on Maui should be about easing into island life. I don’t recommend making any scheduled plans for Day 1. You don’t want to miss a pricey luau or a reservation at Mama’s Fish House due to a delayed flight.

If you’re staying in a condo or vacation rental, you may want to stop by Costco when you land since it’s right by the airport. But before you do your shopping, don’t miss a stop at some of Maui’s best food trucks, located just across the street from Costco.
After the drive from the airport to your vacation rental or resort, take a short walk on the beach, breathe in the salt air, and let the stress of the mainland melt away.

Day 2: Sunrise at Haleakalā + Upcountry Maui
- Sunrise at Haleakalā National Park (reservation required)
- Explore Maui’s beautiful Upcountry
An early start is a must for this day, but there’s a good reason—it’s one of the top things to do on the island. And if you’re on US mainland time, you’ll probably be up ridiculously early today anyway!
Watching the sun rise over Haleakalā National Park is unforgettable, with incredible views from above the clouds. The dormant volcano feels like another planet, with rare silversword plants and the massive Haleakalā crater stretching before you.
Don’t forget that sunrise at Haleakala requires a reservation (and next to Mama’s Fish House, it’s the toughest one on the island!).
If you can’t score a reservation for the day you want to go, the other option is to book a tour. It’s more expensive, but it’s the only way to get around the reservation requirement.

Once the sun is up, spend the rest of your full day exploring Maui’s beautiful Upcountry. It’s the quieter side of Maui with fewer crowds and a great way to see a different side of the island beyond the beaches.

Upcountry highlights include the lavender fields at Ali’i Kula Lavender, surfing goats at the Surfing Goat Dairy, and the strawberry fields at Kula Country Farms – all fun, family-friendly things to do.
Couples will love wine tasting at Maui Wine. And the Ocean Organic Vodka Distillery has a terrific farm-to-table cafe and is a great place to stop for lunch. They have ocean view picnic tables and live music on the lawn.
For a delicious, family-friendly lunch stop, head to Kula Lodge and visit “Da Food Truck.”
Don’t miss the “Paniolo” town of Makawao, known for its friendly cowboy vibe and artisan shops. The whimsical Maui Cookie Lady Shop is a must-see (you’ll thank me later).

- Goat cheese truffles at Surfing Goat Dairy
- Lunch at Ocean Vodka Distillery with farm-to-table fare
- Cookies from the Maui Cookie Lady
Day 3: Kaanapali & the Kapalua Coast
- Morning beach time at Kaanapali Beach (snorkel at Black Rock)
- Walk the Kapalua Coastal Trail
- Relax at Kapalua Bay
- Drive up to see the Nakalele Blowhole
This west coast loop is packed with white sand beaches and ocean views. Spend the morning at Kaanapali Beach, a popular spot for snorkeling near Black Rock.
Then take the Kapalua Coastal Trail, a short walk with ocean views that stretch forever.
In the late afternoon, head to Nakalele Blowhole, a natural wonder where waves shoot water sky-high from a rocky lava flow.

If you’re visiting during whale season (November – March), make some time for a zodiac whale-watching tour on this day; most depart from the Kaanapali or Lahaina area.

If you’re staying in the Kaanapali area, this is the perfect night to book a luau. The top luau on this side of the island is the Maui Nui Luau at the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa.

- Lunch at Aloha Mixed Plate
- Cream pies at Leoda’s Kitchen & Pie Shop
- Sunset dinner at Mala Ocean Tavern
Day 4: Drive the Road to Hana
- Start early and drive the legendary Road to Hana
- Stop at Twin Falls and Waianapanapa Black Sand Beach (reservation required)
- Swim at the Seven Sacred Pools (‘Ohe‘o Gulch)
- Hike the Pipiwai Trail to Waimoku Falls
The Road to Hana is Maui’s most famous scenic drive, and for good reason. This winding road hugs the coast and snakes through rainforests past waterfalls, bamboo groves, and dramatic cliffs.
With over 600 curves and 50 one-lane bridges, the drive itself is as memorable as the stops along the way.
If you choose to drive it yourself, I highly recommend the Shaka Guide App audio tour of the Road to Hana (we would not have survived this drive without it!).

If you’re a DIY kind of traveler like I am, this is the perfect app to download for your Hawaii vacation. These GPS-guided audio tours are fun, easy to follow, and a super affordable way to explore the islands. I bought the whole Hawaii package when we moved here but you can also purchase individual tours.
If you’re not up for driving yourself, a guided tour is a stress-free way to go. The top two guided tours are the Small-Group Road to Hana Adventure Tour with Pickup & Lunch and the Road to Hana Adventure Maui Tour with Lunch.
Bring your bathing suit, because you’ll want to swim at waterfalls, wander through lava tubes, and dip your toes into one of the island’s most iconic black sand beaches at Waianapanapa. Don’t miss the fruit stands and fresh banana bread along the route—it’s part of the experience.
The Road to Hana is a full day, so start early and be ready for a long drive, but it’s one of the best ways to truly visit Maui. Note that some things (like Aunty Sandy’s) are closed on Sundays, so keep that in mind when deciding which day to do this drive.

👉 Tip: Don’t book a luau or dinner reservation for this night, just in case. This drive will take longer than you think!

Day 5: Snorkeling at Molokini Crater + Iao Valley
- Early morning snorkeling tour to Molokini Crater & Turtle Town
- Afternoon hike at Iao Valley State Park (reservation required)
This day is all about marine life. Book a snorkel tour to Molokini Crater, a crescent-shaped volcanic formation that offers some of the clearest waters in the United States.
With your snorkel gear on, you’ll glide through reefs filled with tropical fish, rays, and maybe even reef sharks. Most Molokini tours also visit Turtle Town.
👉 Tip: The most popular day trip to Molokini is the Molokini Snorkeling Adventure Aboard Calypso From Ma’alaea Harbor.
And if it’s whale season, this snorkeling trip also doubles as a whale-watching trip. We did this trip last January and saw SO many whales!
In the afternoon, head to the lush trails of Iao Valley State Park for an easy hike through stunning scenery to see the famous Iao Needle (don’t forget that you’ll need a reservation for this one!).

Day 6: Day Trip to Lāna‘i
- Take the Expeditions Ferry from Maalaea Harbor
- Relax at Hulopo‘e Beach
- Visit the Lanai Cat Sanctuary
Taking the ferry to Lāna‘i is a great way to add another island to your first trip to Maui.
The ride itself takes about 90 minutes and offers incredible views of the West Maui Mountains. In the winter months, this is another great chance to see plenty of humpback whales.
Once on Lāna‘i, start your day exploring the charming shops of Lanai City. Then, head straight to the island’s top attraction, the super awesome cat sanctuary (home to 800+ friendly felines).
After some quality time with the Lanai Lions, hit the beach at Lanai’s beautiful Hulopo’e Beach. While there, don’t miss a stroll over to the tidepools and Sweetheart Rock.
There are some quirks to visiting Lāna‘i. For example, you’ll have to decide if you want to do the off-road parts of the island or stick to the paved roads. And you’ll have to arrange for a car in advance. If you just hop on the ferry and show up, you won’t be able to get around.
On our visit, we rented a regular car instead of a 4WD and stuck to the paved roads (the safer option) and still felt like we were able to see plenty of the island.
It’s a full-day adventure, but one with fewer crowds than the more popular spots on Maui. You’ll come back to your hotel feeling like you’ve discovered a hidden gem of the Hawaiian Islands.

Day 7: Explore Wailea
- Morning snorkel or SUP at Wailea Beach
- Relax at your resort or shop the Shops at Wailea
- Cap off your trip with one last Maui sunset
South Maui is home to some of the best beaches on the island. Spend your final day snorkeling or lounging at Makena Beach (Big Beach) or Wailea Beach, both great places for swimming, sunbathing, and spotting turtles.
Wailea is also one of the best areas for dining, shopping, and live music at night. It’s a good idea to save this day for relaxation after a full week of adventure—you’ll fly home refreshed, sun-kissed, and already planning your second day back on Maui someday soon.
